Nantucket Patterns We Plan Around

Nantucket Memorial Airport is the island’s only airport, three miles from town, so the choice most clients are really making is the aircraft and the timing rather than the field. The main runway is 6,303 feet, with a 538-foot displaced threshold on runway 6 that leaves 5,765 feet of landing distance on that end. There is an ILS approach to both ends, which matters on an island where fog is the most common reason a departure moves.

Aircraft with more than nine passenger seats need two hours’ prior permission, which covers most midsize and larger charter jets. Your advisor makes that call. Martha’s Vineyard requires prior permission twenty-four hours in advance, so on a short-notice booking Nantucket is the island that can take you.

The tower keeps seasonal hours: six in the morning until ten at night from May 15th to September 30th, and six until nine at night through the winter. July and August are the island’s peak, and on a busy weekend it is ramp and parking space rather than aircraft availability that runs out first. There is no customs on the island, so an international trip clears on the mainland at Cape Cod Gateway Airport in Hyannis.
